1 ½ pounds extra-lean ground beef
½ onion, diced
1 green pepper, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups water, divided
¾ cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
Directions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, combine the ground beef and onion. Cook and stir for about 10 minutes, or until the beef is browned and crumbles.
- Green pepper and garlic should be stirred in and cooked for 2 to 3 minutes, until tender. Add 1 cup of water and whisk, scraping the bottom of the pan to dissolve any browned flavor remnants.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and salt after stirring. Stir in the final 1 cup of water, then bring the mixture to a boil. Simmer for about 40 minutes, stirring regularly, until all liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thick.
- Add cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper for seasoning.
